Photography & Filming Policy
Clear guidelines to protect participants while allowing families to capture special moments.
Last updated: March 2026
1. Introduction
The Royal Twirling Association (RTA) recognises that parents, carers, and families wish to photograph and film their children at competitions and events. We also recognise the importance of safeguarding children and ensuring that images are not used inappropriately. This policy sets out the rules for photography and filming at RTA events.
2. General Principles
The welfare and dignity of children and young people must always be the primary consideration when taking, using, or publishing photographs or video footage.
No photographs or video footage of children should be taken or published without the knowledge and prior consent of the child's parent or guardian.
Images should not be used in a way that could cause embarrassment, distress, or harm to any individual.
3. Consent
As part of the RTA registration process, parents and guardians are asked to provide or withhold consent for photography and filming. Troupe leaders must ensure that any dancers who do not have photography consent are identified and that reasonable steps are taken to exclude them from photographs and video footage.
The RTA will display clear signage at events indicating that photography and filming may take place. Any person who does not wish to be photographed should notify an RTA official.
4. Personal Photography by Parents & Families
Parents and family members may photograph or film their own children performing at RTA events for personal use only.
Photography and filming must be done from the designated spectator areas. Individuals must not enter the competition floor, backstage areas, or changing rooms to take photographs.
Images taken at RTA events must not be used for commercial purposes, shared publicly in a way that identifies other people's children without their parents' consent, or posted on social media in a manner that could compromise any child's safety or dignity.
5. Official RTA Photography
The RTA may appoint an official photographer or videographer at events. Official photographers will be clearly identifiable (e.g., by wearing a lanyard or badge).
Images taken by the official photographer may be used by the RTA for promotional purposes, including on the RTA website, social media channels, and printed materials. Parents who have not given consent for their child's image to be used will have their wishes respected.
The RTA will not publish the full name of any child alongside their photograph without specific parental consent.
6. Media & Press
Any media or press representatives wishing to photograph or film at an RTA event must seek permission from the Event Director in advance. They must agree to comply with this policy and any additional requirements set by the RTA.
7. Prohibited Behaviour
The following are strictly prohibited at all RTA events: photography or filming in changing rooms, toilets, or any private areas; taking photographs or video footage of children in a state of undress; any photography or filming that is intrusive, inappropriate, or could be considered voyeuristic; and the use of images of children for any illegal or exploitative purpose.
Any person found to be engaging in prohibited behaviour will be asked to leave the event immediately and may be reported to the Police.
8. Social Media
The RTA encourages positive use of social media to celebrate achievements and promote the sport. When sharing images on social media, individuals should ensure they have appropriate consent, avoid tagging or naming other people's children, and use privacy settings appropriately.
Any concerns about the misuse of images on social media should be reported to the RTA Safeguarding Officer.
9. Review
This policy will be reviewed annually. The next review date is March 2027.
